When I read in an article or tutorial about the MS Word 2000/XP *.doc format.

Is it exactly the same as the MS Word 2003 *.doc format?

If not: What are the differences?

The file format is the same. Word 2003 has some features that would be
downgraded if a document is opened in Word 2000.

If a tutorial mentions Word 2000/XP format (which should really be Word
2000/2002 format*), then the likelihood is that it was just written before
Word 2003 was released.

*The Office version is XP, but the individual apps are 2002.

The .doc format is the same in all versions of Word. You may be thinking
about the new .docx format that debuted with Word 2007.

Documents in the .doc format will look and work the same in Word 2007
and Word 2010.
