mendeley preparing to format citations

I was working on a large word document last night and realised it was taking a while for mendeley to insert references. When i finished working i closed the file and saved it on USB and desktop.

This morning i came to open the file and it would open and say mendeley is preparing to format your citations then the document loads completely empty..0 words page 1 of 1

the file is 11 KB big so i know its not empty!! please help
