If you can open the file in Open Office, that might be your best bet -- just
save it as a DOC file and then open it in Word. I know Open Office's
presentation application is often used to recover files that PowerPoint says
are "corrupt." It does as good a job, and sometimes even better, than the
recovery tools on the market.
Since your issue is with a Word document specifically, you might want to
post to one of the Word groups and ask for recommendations on recovering a
corrupt file -- it may not be to use one of those recovery programs. Tell
them what version of Word, what version of Windows, where the file is on
your harddrive, how you're opening it (double-clicking vs using File | Open
in Word), and the exact wording of the error message you receive when you
post.
